How a night at Fujiya goes

You sit around the hotplate. Everything on your plate is cooked a metre from your seat, and the fried rice arrives by air.

A Gordon classic since 2004

Fujiya has been Gordon’s Japanese teppanyaki restaurant for more than two decades, and the idea is as simple as ever: sit around the hotplate, order a set and try to catch your dinner. There’s no stage and no dress code. There is a chef with two spatulas and very good aim.

A lot of our reviews are written by people on a return visit, which is the part we’re proudest of.

With over 20 years of teppanyaki experience, Chefs Jack and Ben deliver top-quality food and service to you at every table.

Back for seconds, with an 81‑year‑old and the kids

One guest enjoyed their first night so much that they came back soon after and brought three generations along: a mother of 81, a husband of 85 and their partner’s children.

“…fun all around for everyone, no matter the age!”

By the end of the meal the eldest boy had made up his mind: this year’s birthday party is happening at the hotplate.

Common questions people ask

Can’t see yours? Call (02) 9880 2388.

Do I need to book?

We recommend booking, especially Friday to Sunday, when we’re often full. Walk-ins are welcome too, and we’ll always do our best to find you a seat. That’s easier on quieter nights.

Is Fujiya BYO?

Yes. You’re welcome to bring your own wine or beer, and we’ll keep it cold and pour it for you. We also have a short drinks list.

Is it good for kids?

Yes, we’re family-friendly and we love cooking for kids. Our kids’ menu is the kids’ set, $35, which comes with chicken teriyaki, beef tenderloin, fried rice and vegetables. We let children catch a bowl of fried rice, and most finish with a pancake and ice cream ($7.50). More on kids, birthdays and groups.

Do you take birthday parties and group bookings?

Yes. We host plenty of birthday parties, children’s parties and large group bookings, and we’ll always do our best to fit your whole group in. Everyone at the table can order a different set. We may ask for a deposit for groups of 10 or more. Let us know it’s a birthday when you book. See kids, birthdays and groups.

What is teppanyaki?

Teppanyaki is Japanese food cooked on a flat steel hotplate, the teppan. At Fujiya you sit around the hotplate while your chef cooks steak, seafood, vegetables and fried rice in front of you, with a bit of a show along the way. In America it’s often called hibachi. Read our first-timer’s guide to teppanyaki.

Will food really be thrown at me?

Some of it. Your chef flips fried rice into your bowl and may toss you an egg to catch. Our chefs read the table, so everyone joins in and no one is put on the spot. Wear something you’re relaxed in.

Do you cater for vegetarians, gluten-free diners or allergies?

Yes. We always do our best to cater for every dietary requirement, including vegetarian and gluten-free diners. Everything is cooked on a shared hotplate, so please tell us about any allergy or dietary need when you book, and your chef will do their best to plan your meal around it.

Are you open for lunch?

No, we’re open for dinner only, Tuesday to Sunday from 5pm onwards.
